Charles R. Copp, 86, of Guy & Mary Felt Manor, Emporium, PA formerly of West Creek Rd. died at Guy & Mary Felt Manor, Emporium, PA on Saturday (September 24, 2016) afternoon. He was born May 2, 1930 in Ansonia, Tioga County, PA a son of the late Sterry O. and Mildred Smith Copp. On December 24, 1949 in Painted Post, NY he married Virginia Matteson, who survives.
Charles attended school in Wellsboro In 1947 he enlisted in the US Army and served in Korea until 1949. Later he was called back to the service and again served in Korea until 1951 when he was discharged. He was awarded the bronze star for his service. Charles work for Corning Glass Works for over 23 years before moving to Emporium 1969. After moving to Emporium, he was employed by Emporium contractors and later by Emporium Borough and Shippen Township. In 1992 he was elected Shippen township supervisor. He retired on May 2, 1995.
Surviving in addition to his wife Virginia Copp; two sons, Rickey Lee (Pam) Copp and Robert O. (Vicki) Copp; one daughter, Wanda Jordan. 10 Grandchildren, 14 Great Grandchildren and 1 Great Great Grandchild; one Brother, Sterry (Jean) Copp.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sterry O. and Mildred Smith Copp, one sister, Mariam Sample, two brothers, Ronald & Lauren Copp,
No visitation. A Memorial Service will be held at the VFW, 3rd St., Emporium, PA on Sunday (October 9, 2016) at 1:00 PM with a Military Service will be accorded by the Cameron County Memorial Detail to follow.

Alferetta M. Barkley, 91, of Guy & Mary Felt Manor, Emporium, PA died at the Manor on Tuesday (September 20, 2016) morning. She was born May 12, 1925 in Clymer, PA a daughter of the late Homer and Halley Barkley. After graduating from Marion Center High School Alferetta moved to Emporium and began working at Sylvania where she worked for over 40 years. She later worked at the former Grove House for several years. She had been a member of the Rich Valley Wesleyan Church. She loved spending time with all of her grandchildren.

Survived by one daughter, Dorothy Reed, Emporium; 2 Grandchildren, Ruthie (Kenneth) Burkhouse, and Brad Reed and three Great Grandchildren, Kelly Kimberly & Trevor

She was preceded in death by her parents, Homer and Halley Barkley and five brothers, Ted, Ernie, Jack, Dick & Bill Barkley.

There will be No Visitation. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service to be held at the Barnett Funeral Home, 207 E. Fourth Street, Emporium, PA on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Joseph Short, Pastor, First United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will be in the Newton Cemetery, Emporium, PA

Bertyl LaRue Kindblom Emmett 89, passed away unexpectedly of natural causes on Thursday, September 22nd, 2016 in her home. She was the daughter of the late Oscar Kindblom and Genevieve Peterson Kindblom. Bertyl was born on September 9, 1927.

Bertyl is survived by her four children: David (Michele) Emmett Jr of Greencastle, PA, Karen (Richard) Emmett Ziemlak of Rowley, MA, Cassandra (Frank) Emmett Campbell of Collegeville, PA, John (Lisa) Emmett of Gainesville, VA, eight grandchildren and her former husband David Emmett Sr.

She was preceded in death by her only sibling, a sister Betty Kindblom Coleman

She graduated from Emporium High School in 1945 and then attended and graduated from Moore College of Art in Philadelphia. Bertyl was an avid member and past President of the Emporium Garden Club for many years. She was a very gifted, talented and active artist throughout her life. Her love of her children and grandchildren never wavered nor did her energy and zest for life.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, October 1, 2016 at Barnett Funeral Home, 207 E. Fourth St., Emporium, PA. at 2:00 PM with Rev. Bruce Burkness officiating. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Emporium Garden Club, PO Box 341 Emporium PA  15834

Thomas L Rossman Sr., 71 of Pinecrest Manor, St. Marys PA, passed away following a lengthy illness on Saturday, September 17, 2016 surrounded by family. Thomas was born September 7, 1945 in Coudersport PA, a son of the late Hugh and Violet Willoughby Rossman. He was married to the late Marion Forness.

Thomas retired from Motor Coils Manufacturing after 20+ years of service. He was a 20 year member of the Emporium Fire Department and was also self employed for many years in the Novelty business, initially traveling on the weekends with his family to various flea markets and carnivals. He became semi-retired and passed the business on to his son Tony. He continued to travel with him to fairs and festivals. Thomas loved to travel, at one point riding over the road, trucking with his son Tom seeing the other parts of the US that he never traveled too. He loved spending his winter’s in Florida scoping out new merchandise for the upcoming year and of course the yearly trip to Las Vegas for the Expo. Anyone who knew Thomas understood his love of “recycling”; he never wasted anything, he felt that everything could be reused; even the nursing home’s worked with him and allowed him to continue this life long tradition, to keep him happy. He was a 20 year member of the Emporium Fire Department a member of the St. Marys Elks and the Moose.

Thomas is survived by two sons, Thomas (Terri) Rossman Jr. of Rochester PA and Tony (Resty) Rossman of Emporium PA. He is survived by 5 grandchildren: Leeanna (Dustin) Rossman of Clermont, Florida, Kaydee Rossman of DuBois PA, Keisha Dornish of Honolulu Hawaii, Brendan Dornish of St. Marys PA and Anthony Dornish of Johnsonburg PA, and his great grandchildren Edward and Bella Kramer of Clermont Florida, who were the loves of his life and one brother, Hubert (Debbie) Rossman of Brownsville Texas. He is also survived by his step-children Tammy (Rick) Griffith, and Roy (Sharon) Elliott Jr. both of Emporium PA, David Elliott of Hampton, Virginia; or some would say they are his niece and nephew’s as he was also married to their aunt. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents Thomas was preceded in death by his wife Marion Forness Rossman, a brother, Dale Rossman, and two sisters, Wanita Paige and Patricia Bennett.

The Family will be holding a Memorial Service at Pinecrest Manor, St. Marys, PA for residents and employees at a date to be determined and also a Memorial Service on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Barnett Funeral Home, 207 E. 4th St., in Emporium PA with the Rev. Donald Smith officiating.

Leslie “Les” Geelen, age 94, of Old West Creek Road, Emporium, died Friday, September 30, 2016, in Emporium.  Born July 21, 1922 inRathburn, PA, he was the son of Patrick and Jenny Skillman Geelen and was formerly married to Betty Spellenburg.


A lifelong area resident, he was a 1940 graduate of Emporium High School.  He was hired at Sylvania in July, 1940 working at various positions including Production Supervisor and General Foreman, and at the time of his retirement from Sylvania/GTE/Phillips in 1983 was in the Traffic Department as Supervisor of Trucking. 


In 1943 he joined the Army, and started a military career spanning over a decade with tours of duty during WWII in North Africa, Italy andFrance, and a period in the Army Reserves.  He was recalled to duty in Korea, but the war ended just days before his scheduled deployment.  He was promoted several times during WWII culminating with the rank of 1st Lieutenant.  During the war he was notorious for always being in the front line in nearly every battle.  He was the most highly decorated veteran from Cameron County, and his courage and heroism earned him a Purple Heart, numerous Bronze Star Medals, and a Silver Star for Valor in combat.


Les was a member of the First Baptist Church in Emporium, was a past Shippen Township Tax Collector and formerly served as a Cameron County Commissioner.  For many years he served on the Board of Directors of the Guy and Mary Felt Manor.  He was a lifetime member of the Emporium Country Club, and a 70+ year member of VFW Post #6221, and American Legion Post #194. 


His life was enriched by two daughters, Patti Kelly and husband Kim of Cupertino, CA and Jean M. Sizer of Emporium; one sister, Annabelle Bloomquist of Clinton, NY; four grandchildren, Steven Kelly, Suzanne Kelly, Daniel Sizer and Sarah Sizer; one great grandson, Bradley Lukaschunis a special treasure in his later years; and his special friend, Jean Ann Mitchell of Altoona, all of whom survive him, as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, James David Geelen and an infant brother Harold; and one sister, Frances Mix Grimone. 


His life of service to his country, service to his community and the support of his family and many friends at their time of need is an example to all of a great American, great Father and great Friend.  “Papa” will be sorely missed by all who knew and love him.


The family will receive friends from 3-7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 4, 2016 in the Coppersmith-Condon Funeral Home, Emporium where Funeral and Committal Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Joseph Short pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Emporium, officiating.  Burial will follow in Moore Hill Cemetery, Emporium.

Hazel “Betty” Walton Vogel, 73, formerly of Portersville passed away unexpectedly Thursday, September 1, 2016 at her residence in Emporium, PA.


Born December 15, 1942 in Castlewood, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Ellen Williams Walton.


Betty worked for the United States Postal Service for 25 years, retiring as the Postmaster of Austin, PA. She enjoyed traveling with her companion, Robert McClymonds, living six months in Emporium and the other six months in Fruitland Park, Florida. She will truly be missed by her family.


Survivors include four sons, Larry (Brenda) Lumley Jr. of Chicora, Chuck (Beverly) Lumley of Portersville, Gene Lumley of Emporium, Brian Lumley of Courtland, New York; sister, Myrna (Larry) Eicholtz of Wampum; brother, Bill (Nancy) Walton of Ellwood City; four grandchildren, Jason, Chad, Ethan, and Parker Lumley; two step grandchildren, Bob and Crystal Drake; and one great grandson, Lyland Lumley; and seven step great grandchildren.


She was preceded in death by her late husband, Robert Vogel, her parents and a sister, Diane Walton.


Visiting hours will be held on Saturday September 3 from 11:00 am until the time of the funeral service at 1:00 pm at the Marshall Funeral Home Rev. Elizabeth Wallace of Christ Presbyterian Church will officiate. Interment will follow in the Mount Hope Cemetery.

Melvin C. Dillen, age 76, of Emporium, passed away peacefully at the Good Samaritan House in Wexford, PA Friday evening, September 2,  following a short illness.
Born April 4, 1940 in Utahville,  PA,  he was the son of Raymond C. and Mabel I. Semple Dillen.  He graduated from BCI High School, Coalport, in 1958. He served in the United States Army, stationed at Fort Hood, TX.
Melvin was employed at Penn Vend in Emporium for many years, retiring in 2002.  He was a longtime member of the Emporium Volunteer Fire Department, loyal member of the Emporium Fire Police and was a volunteer EMT for the Emporium Ambulance Association for many years.   He was a member of the Bucktail Rod and Gun Club, Cameron County VFW and the American Legion Post #194.

Melvin loved the outdoors, was an avid gardener and hunter, but his true passion was fishing.  He also was a huge fan of the Pirates and Steelers.               He was a kind man, proud of his home and family, a storyteller with a quick wit and sense of humor.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy, of 28 years; two sons: Jamie (Dana), Charlotte, NC, and Chuck (Val), Eagle River, AK; two granddaughters: Lauren Elizabeth Haley, Seven Fields, PA and Randi Moate, Emporium; a grandson Tygue, AK; two brothers: Ellis (Blairetta) Dillen, Chardon, OH and David (Nanci) Dillen, Mooresville, NC and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers: Alvin, Norman and William.

Visitation will be at the Barnett Funeral Home, 207 E. Fourth Street, Emporium, PA on Tuesday from 4-7 PM. Funeral Service will be held at the Barnett Funeral Home on Wednesday (September 7, 2016) at 10:00 AM with Rev. Joseph Short, Pastor, First United Methodist Church, officiating.

Dale L. Werts, 87, of 325 West Fourth St., Emporium, PA died at Guy & Mary Felt Manor, Emporium, PA on Friday (September 2, 2016) morning.


He was born December 16, 1928 in Brockway, PA a son of the late Donald and Mildred Billingsley Werts. On August 25, 1956 in Smethport, PA he married Janice Gustafson Werts, who survives. They just celebrated 60 years of marriage. Dale was a 1948 graduate of Emporium High School. He was employed for over 25 years at Sylvania in both Emporium and Williamsport, PA. He returned to Emporium in 1971 and was employed by Elmer Johnson's Auto Sales. From 1973 to 1990 Dale and Janice owned and operated Werts News and Gifts, retiring in 1990. In retirement he enjoyed camping and spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. He was a member and past president of the Emporium Rotary Club and a member and past president of the Emporium Men's Club. He had served on the Board of Directors at Citizens Trust Company. Dale was also a member of the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce and the Bucktailers Camping Club. He was also a member of the First United Methodist Church of Emporium.


In addition to his wife Janice Werts he is survived by three daughters, Lori (David) Sullivan, Kristen (Brian) Burfield, Connie Garrigan, all of Emporium;

 7 Grandchildren, Casey, Daniel & Shannon Sullivan, Cara & Jordan Garrigan, 

Blake &Brooke Burfield:

three nephews, David, John & Stephen Lewis; 


He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Mildred Billingsley Werts; a son-in-law, Richard Garrigan; sister, Gwendolyn Lewis.
